May Day at Brooklyn College

On May 1st, 2008, the Brooklyn College AntiWar (B.C.A.W.) coalition held a tabling with the Brooklyn College Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance (BCLGBTA) in order to accomplish a number of goals:

  • Awareness for a progressive agenda including support for the Professional Staff Congress (P.S.C.)
  • Building connections with other clubs through action
  • Begin building awareness for the Rock Against The War event
  • Perform a silent vigil in support of the "Day of Silence" advocated by the BCLGBTA

How did it go???

It was hard to miss B.C.A.W. members handing our fliers and engaging students in conversation but -- not to be outdone -- were BCLGBTA members displaying signs promoting a more progressive agenda on campus and even wearing tape over their lips to help demonstrate for their cause. Furthermore, at approx. 2p.m., B.C.A.W. and BCLGBTA stood side by side in a silent vigil near the Computer Cafe.

This vigil -- shown on the left -- left members feeling empowered while curious onlookers realized that it was not just another day on Brooklyn College. While not the only event on campus, we did have a lot of success bringing awareness and building new allies.
